Taraweeh (Night Prayer of Ramadan)

I have been summoned,

To stand witness,

To my faith.

I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

As the time draws near,

I wait,

With breathless anticipation.

I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

If I am allowed to meet,

I must have been forgiven,

For always being late,

For my appointment with the Book of Allah.

If Allah wills, His Words,

Will flow through my soul,

And His Messengers I will meet.

For I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

I will walk the streets,

Of cities now ruined,

Trembling at the punishments that they received.

For I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

I will meet Maryam in her mihrab,

See Hajar’s face whipped by the desert heat,

And admire the firmness of their faith.

For I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

The logic behind the laws,

Will be revealed to my heart.

Obedience will pour forth, the limbs will concede.

For I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

I will be at a loss to know…

Are the words more beautiful,

Or the Paradise that they show?

For I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

I will sip from the rivers,

Of milk, honey and wine,

And an insatiable thirst will be born.

For I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

The Messenger (saws) and his companions,

Will be my companions for a while.

On their losses I will cry, on their triumphs I will smile.

For I have an appointment with the Book of Allah.

As the chapters close their doors,

I will be asked over and over again,

“Is there no one who will receive the warning?”

For I have to answer the Book of Allah.

I will weep as it comes to an end.

Not the tears of someone,

Crossing a finish line.

For I still have to answer the Book of Allah.

The tears are of gratitude,

Of humility, of love and of hope,

That once I have crossed over to the other side,

The Book of Allah will keep,

Its appointment with me.
